The idea of a side hustle is nothing new, but so many times it gets a bad rap. We love side hustles, especially services side hustles as they take very little extra resources or investment to get going. In this episode, we’re going to talk about the power of a side hustle offering services.
Here’s the scoop from Episode #95:
If you’re not familiar with the idea of a side hustle, it’s a business you start on the side. You may be doing it in addition to your full-time job or even as a second business to bring in a little (or a lot of) extra cash.
You may be wondering why we’re talking about side hustles, and the first reason is that side hustles get a bad rap. There are so many misconceptions about the idea of this side gig that we wanted to talk about and put to rest.
Why side hustles get a bad rap:
- A lot of people don’t make money as they’re chasing unicorns, so people think they’re a waste of time. This is NOT true. If you focus on services, you have a way to quickly generate revenue with just a handful of clients (or even 1 or 2).
- There’s an idea out there that you’re not serious about your business unless you’re in it full-time.
- There’s the perception that side hustlers aren’t legit, but some of the most legit business owners we know are side hustlers — and likely will be forever. They also have no plans to quit their day job!
Full disclosure: We’ve both side hustled in the past with good results. Maggie ran a super successful crafting business, and Brittany taught yoga and did Infusionsoft consulting. Both of us did this while working our full-time gigs.
Why we love side hustles:
- They can be a great way to test a business idea without quitting your job and putting your financial status in peril.
- It can give you freedom from desperate financial decisions as the basics are already covered.
- Side hustles don’t even need to be something that are designed to be a full-time job.
- Side hustlers get shit done. Really. They don’t have time to waste so they are laser focused.
- It leaves room for experimentation and creativity.
- It gives you a creative or passion fueled outlet. Sometimes your day gig is just too freaking lucrative to give up, yet you need something to feed your soul in the meantime, and a hobby is not your jam.
Making the most of a side hustle:
- Don’t listen to the naysayers. Some people have hobbies and Netflix — you have a side hustle.
- Be realistic about your time and what you can get done. You may be slower building your business, but you’re moving towards your goals just the same.
- Do a time audit. We guarantee you that most people have 5 hours of “wasted time” each week that could be dedicated to a side hustle.
- Time block. Set aside dedicated chunks of time to work on your side hustle.
- Get clear on your side hustle goals. Why are you doing this? To save up for a trip? To pay down debt? To have extra guilt-free spending money? And then also ask yourself: What are you willing to give up? Can you cut down your Netflix time? Can you get up 30 minutes earlier, etc.?
- Build in milestones that you can strive towards.
- Go with the flow. It’s a side hustle, which means it’s probably not your #1 priority and that’s okay. Be okay with adjusting plans if need be, yet stay accountable.
